A great place to search for the orange and purple variations is the cave at 54,78 during the Rupert the Gentleman Elemental questline. The cave is full of elites, but during the quests you get a damage and defense buff, and the cave is chock full of Endmites. I got multiple blue endmites and blue backline pets, too.

Took me about 80 resets to get the purple/blue variant

Found the purple variant as a backline pet. I only had to reset twice to get it, so either it is not that rare or I just got lucky.
