Legion Alpha: New Pets, Achievements, and Magic Pet Mirror Changes

May 06, 2016
New pets were added in the latest Legion Alpha build, plus new battling achievements with a pet reward. [source]

New and Updated Pets
Nightmare Lasher and Nightmare Treant

The list of pets coming in Legion is ever-growing; four new pets were recently added!

  • Benax, a new frog pet. Where it will come from is not currently listed, however it will likely be a drop from Suramar rarespawn, Anax.
  • The Nightmare Lasher (pictured above left) comes from a lootable treasure. The treasure's location is currently unspecified.
  • Joining the lasher is the Nightmare Treant (pictured above right). However, unlike the former this corrupted little tree is a reward from an achievement. More details below.
  • What goes best with an Enchanted Pen? A magical book, of course! The Court Scribe, a reputation vendor pet, will be the perfect partner for the pen.

In addition to these new pets, a handful of other pets have been updated.

Including the Court Scribe, a total of six pets will come from Broken Isle reputation vendors.

Baby Elderhorn
Baby Elderhorn (pictured right) from Highmountain Tribe, Fledgling Warden Owl from The Wardens, and Sunborne Val'kyr from Valarjar, to name a few.

Before purchasing these pets, players must first earn Revered with each associated faction.

For a full list of updated pets, check out our list of all datamined pets from Alpha.

There are currently 90 new pets coming in Legion, but there could be more!

Fun Family Feats
If you're looking for a Pet Battle challenge, look no further than Legion — there are 11 new battling achievements.

These achievements will test your ability to outwit and outplay 12 Broken Isle Master Tamers using a team comprised only of pets from the same family.

There are 10 achievements in total, one for each pet family, plus one meta-achievement that rewards the Nightmare Treant.

Are you ready to take on this unique task? (Pet) Battles await on the Broken Isles!

Magic Pet Mirror Changes
We recently discovered that the Magic Pet Mirror will be receiving a quality of life update in Legion.

Currently, performing player actions such as casting a spell or summoning a different pet will remove the Magic Pet Mirror costume. This makes it difficult to fully enjoy the toy.

Magic Pet Mirror costume and casting Glide
Fortunately the toy will be getting an update in Legion, allowing the Magic Pet Mirror costume to persist through most player actions. These include but are not limited to the following.

  • Summoning or unsummoning a pet
  • Casting player spells and abilities
  • Hearthing and zoning
  • Using other toys
  • Shapeshifting

Mounting will cause the costume to temporarily disappear, however the buff is retained and the costume will reappear after dismounting.

Magic Pet Mirror costume with Zen Pilgrimage
The Magic Pet Mirror costume will still be lost upon entering combat.

With the ability to combine pet appearances and player spells, there will be some especially entertaining combinations.

Just to name a few: Wearing the Magic Pet Mirror costume while using the Demon Hunter ability Glide (pictured above), a Mage's Mirror Image, and a Monk's Zen Pilgrimage (pictured right).

Pet Battle Royale: Howl Bomb Throwdown

May 10, 2016
Pet Battle RoyaleWhile pet battling can be a good time, sometimes it's a lot of fun to think how our favorite companions might fare in a different kind of fight. The ring is ready for another Pet Battle Royale!

Here, we examine a few different battle pets and then you, the WarcraftPets community, vote to determine the winner.

Howl Bomb
The popular Howl Bomb strategy has shown up on the site before due to its effectiveness. The Unborn Valkyr brings a 25% damage buff with Unholy Ascension, after which the Pandaren Water Spirit uses Geyser then Whirlpool. Chrominius tops it off with a huge multiplier from Howl, and maybe a Surge of Power the next turn to finish off a big opponent. It’s an effective strategy, and a famous one among pet battlers.

Now, each of the pets on this stellar team is claiming they’re the reason it’s so effective and that they're really the sole pet deserving of that fame. It’s tearing the team apart, so it’s time for the Warcraft Pets community to decide which of these three pets deserves the win.

Here’s the tale of the tape...

Unborn Val'kyr
Breed: Unborn Val’kyr
Name: Helene
Age: Unknowable by traditional means
Height: 28 inches
Weight: How dare you ask a lady such a question
Wingspan: 52.1 inches
Reach: Infinite
Hometown: Northrend
Signature Move: Haunt
Favorite Food: Souls of the innocent

Chrominius
Breed: Chrominius
Name: Snuffles
Age: 10 years, 11 months
Height: 17 feet, 2 inches
Weight: 372 pounds
Reach: 9 feet 6 inches
Hometown: Blackwing Lair
Signature Move: Howl
Favorite Food: Hourglass Sand

Pandaren Water Spirit

Breed: Pandaren Water Spirit
Name: Yao Shui
Age: Immortal
Height: varies
Weight: depends on the container
Reach: varies
Hometown: Vale of Eternal Blossoms
Signature Move: Geyser
Favorite Food: Water

You Decide Who Wins!
So, WarcraftPets, who should win?

The easy money would be to immediately discount Snuffles, as his two opponents are technically unkillable demigods. However, his draconic lineage affords him a bit of invulnerability against Yao Shui. Since the first step being made to nerf this strategy is to place Geyser and Whirlpool in the same slot, the case can be made that perhaps Yao Shui has the right to call itself the main force in this particular strategy.

The wildcard is definitely Helene. While she is a fierce fighter, her divalicious nature means that anything can happen. She is especially prized on the Warcraft Pets site for her beautiful, unique model, but it remains to be seen whether The Rarest of Them All will even deign to show up to the battle.

Will it be Helene the Unborn Val’kyr, Snuffles aka Chrominius, or Yao Shui the Pandaren Water Spirit? Log into our forums and cast your vote to make your voice heard.

Head to the poll and cast your vote

Voting ends May 21st, so don't delay in helping decide which pet takes all!

New Murloc Pet Coming Soon?

May 13, 2016
A new pet was discovered during Legion testing, Squirky! This wide-eyed murloc uses a new model and skin.

Squirky
Where Squirky (pictured right) will come from is currently unlisted and unknown. Could its flavor text be any hint?

"During November, a secretive clan of murlocs often sends young tadpoles out to explore, adventure, and begin their tale."

There's speculation that this pet will be part of the BlizzCon 2016 goodie bag, or even a WoW Anniversary pet.

Another possibility is that Squirky is tied to the upcoming WoW Traveler book series.

This isn't the first 'Squirky' to appear in-game — A low level quest in Ironforge, Fish fer Squirky, involves feeding fish to a fisherman's murloc pet. However, the murloc featured in this quest uses the original baby murloc model.

Wherever Squirky pops up, we look forward to adopting another murloc friend!

Where do you think this pet will come from?

Doom Bloom — Pet of the Month: May 2016

May 19, 2016

April showers bring May flowers...sort of. With its three gaping mouth-blossoms and many sharp teeth, we're not sure we would want this 'flower' growing in our flowerbeds. Then again, it would make a great rodent and pest deterrent.

Let's take a quick look at Doom Bloom!

Collecting Doom Bloom
Doom Bloom
Doom Bloom is a vicious little Mandragora that can be obtained from a rare spawn in Gorgrond.

Mandrakor can be found inside a cave in Cragplume Cauldron in central Gorgrond.

The entrance of the cave is directly east of Breaker's Crown flightpoint, and just slightly northwest of Highpass. 49.0, 53.6, for those that utilize coordinates.

The rare spawn is level 93 and has the Vile Blood buff. The encounter is straight forward and is easily solo-able by max level characters.

Beware its ability Sticky Spit, however. This attack leaves behind pools of acid that you should avoid.

Mandrakor has a quick respawn timer, so if you miss out on a chance to defeat it, don't worry! Another plus is that Doom Bloom has a 100% droprate from this rare spawn, but only upon a character's first kill. Subsequent kills on the same character will not yield the pet.

Doom Bloom is easy to collect and has a unique look. It would do well in a garden (we think) and fits perfectly in any collection. Don't forget to feed it once in a while, but maybe rethink the plant fertilizer. "Feed me, Seymour!"

Battling with Doom Bloom
Despite its name, the Doom Bloom is no shrinking violet. It's a unique pickup with a good amount of utility under its belt. Its moves have a particularly interesting setup. The move choices in each slot offer similar mechanics.

In the first slot, there's a choice of two different damage moves. Lash is Elemental and hits several times, while Bite is a Beast move that only hits once, but harder.

The second slot features a heal, giving the Bloom a bit of longevity. Healing Wave is straightforward, but Consume Corpse is a bit more provisional, and functions best if your pet is the last one alive on the team.

Enemy pet afflicted with Stun Seed
Lastly, the third slot features moves with crowd control on a delay. Stun Seed (pictured above) explodes after 3 rounds, dealing damage to and stunning the front pet. Entangling Roots explodes the round after it's cast, but only roots your opponent's pet — they're still allowed to use their moves, but can't swap pets. Both moves deal an identical amount of damage when they explode, though due to Entangling Roots' shorter cooldown it does more effective DPS. Stun Seed's stun is arguably a more valuable crowd control than the roots, but both can offer excellent utility.

The Doom Bloom is a fun, versatile little pet with a lot to offer. Just maybe take a Benadryl to avoid that deadly pollen count.

Check out our forum thread discussion on Doom Bloom and submit your own thoughts on this pet.

Legion Beta: New Achievement and Two New Pets

May 21, 2016
A Legion Beta patch was recently released. It included a new Safari achievement and two new pets. [source]

New Achievement and Pets
Rescued Fawn
There are many new wild pets that can be found on the Broken Isles in Legion. Some reside in specific locations in a zone, and there are even a couple hiding in Dalaran.

Collect all 35 wild pets and you'll complete the new achievement Broken Isles Safari.

You'll also receive a Rescued Fawn (pictured left), not to be confused with its cousin, the wild Gleamhoof Fawn.

Wonderous Wisdomball
The second newest addition is an especially odd one — Wonderous Wisdomball (pictured right). It's a literal floating head in a ball that resembles Khadgar!

This "pet" cannot battle but it might be able to provide some direction and wise words during your adventures on the Broken Isles.

All Legion Alpha datamined pets

Currently there are 95 new pets coming in the expansion. This could change and not all pets are guaranteed to be released (but we certainly hope to see all of them).

Which pet are you looking forward to collecting the most? All of them? Let's consult the Wonderous Wisdomball: "All leylines point to yes."

Legion Beta: Snowfang and Three Mystery Pets

May 27, 2016
UPDATE: Snowfang has been found hanging out in the Shaman Order Hall on Beta! Defeating his NPC will reward the pet. [source]

An adorable new pet was added in the latest Legion Beta patch. Plus three mystery pets — what could they be? [source]

A New Pup
Snowfang
Snowfang (pictured right) is the newest addition to the Legion Beta.

According to its flavor text, this cute puppy is the offspring of Thrall's own frostwolf, Snowsong. It also hints that we may have to defeat Snowsong in order to collect Snowfang.

"A pup of Thrall's frostwolf, Snowsong, besting her in combat has earned you a lifelong companion."

Snowfang is currently listed as wild, but this could change prior to the expansion's release.

All Legion Alpha datamined pets

With this pet, the current total number of new pets coming in Legion is nearing 100!

Mystery Pets
Perculia, Site Director of Wowhead, pointed out three new mysterious items in the recent Beta patch.

There's currently no indication what these companions will be or where they will come from.

Could one be a placeholder for a possible BlizzCon pet? Or even a new charity pet (which is usually announced during the convention)?

We'll have to wait and see. Stay tuned, hopefully we'll have more information on these pets in the near future!
